Food Science and Its Importance in Health, Technological Development, and Society

Dear friends,

We are here to celebrate 30 years of the Latin American Symposium on Food Science, SLACA, now expanded to the Latin American Symposium on Food Science and Nutrition - SLACAN.

The 16th SLACAN will be held on November 17, 18 and 19 at the Monte Real Hotel in Águas de Lindóia, with the theme “Food Science and its Importance in Health, Technological and Social Development.”

This year’s theme demonstrates in itself the importance and scope that the Food area has gained over the years; it is impossible to disconnect science from the development of society.

During this festive moment, many memories come to visit us, dear people who made the event possible, students, former students, employees, colleagues from all over Brazil, supporters, and especially the Professors of the Food Science Department at FEA, together with the administration of FEA and UNICAMP, which has always been a partner!

It was March 1995, and some colleagues from the department, especially Professor Delia Amaya, began to discuss the importance of holding a scientific event that would highlight the role and importance that food science was taking on at that time and that it would become a major area of ​​scientific research and development. and industrialist in the area.

Professor Adélia was a scientist well-known for her competence, intelligence and vision, to whom we attribute much of the successful conception of SLACA and its successive editions with an ever-increasing number of participants.

As with everything that is created, the difficulties were immense, from allocating a space for it to obtaining sponsorships that could make the event viable and the great concern about how it would be received by the scientific community in the food area and also in the industrial area.

It is important to emphasize that we had never organized scientific events and, therefore, everything was a great learning experience, with challenges, despair, joy and achievements!

After 30 years and looking back, we are extremely proud to have contributed not only to the development of food science in the country and in Latin America, but also to have produced an association of groups of scientists from Brazil and the world that allowed our students to have a broader view of the area and also a huge boost in postgraduate studies in Food Science in the country.

All of this joint work in the area was expanded by the interaction with the international organization IUFoSt (International Union of Food Science and Technology) in 2010.

As we begin the 16th edition of SLACAN, I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the people, both those who were there and those who followed, for making this journey so successful, full of joy and achievements.

May the new generations of teachers, researchers and students have as their goal the audacity to create, open paths and seek out new things in an area of ​​such importance to society in Brazil and the world!
